Bristol played and important role during the growth of the Industrial Revolution. The Delaware Canal ended in the town of Bristol, thereby making the town's significance even greater. Coal from the Lehigh Canal came to Bristol for distribution down the Delaware Canal. Trade from New York also made its way to Bristol. The role of the Canal can't be underestimated in the growth of Bristol and the surrounding communities.
The town was named after the town of Bristol, England and was settled in 1681. It was the county seat of Bucks county until 1725, when that distinction moved to Doylestown.
Bristol was a major center of manufacturing, including textile mills and metal foundries.
Some of the historic areas and buildings include:
- King George II Inn
- House on Mill Street
- Harriman Historic District.
- Some elements of the old shipyards
