Nonprofit Spotlight: THE CONSERVATORY

the conservatory Nonprofit Spotlight: THE CONSERVATORYIt’s amazing how many of us take for granted our abilities or even worse overlook our talents. Many convince themselves that they don’t have any creativity and often refuse to look at the possibilities within. Vincent Van Gogh was quoted as saying, “If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” The word “paint” in that quote can easily be changed to sing or dance or playing an instrument. The point is, just doing squelches the naysayer inside.

The Conservatory exists for you to explore your potential and to uncover what lies within. It offers individual and group instruction in music, art and drama ranging from the very basics to advanced college preparation and professional development. The experienced faculty of more than fifty working musicians and artists are ready to support your journey. Whether you have always wanted to play the piano or you would like to try your hand at painting, The Conservatory’s programs are intended for you to do so successfully in a positive and fun-filled environment.

No one is excluded from The Conservatory’s mission to make the arts accessible. The Conservatory’s outreach programs bring the arts to persons who might otherwise not have access. The Arts Therapy Program provides healing and growth using the arts for persons with disabilities. The Arts for Seniors Program opens up the arts for those more advanced in years, while the Neighborhood Notes program explores artistic activities with disadvantaged and at-risk youth.

Imagine our loss if Beethoven had allowed his deafness to stop him in the discovery of music. Consider the impact on the arts if Grandma Moses had not had the courage to begin painting as she began to age. Now, look at what you might have to offer or gain if you just take the chance and try something new and creative.

Nonprofit Spotlight: Bucks County Opportunity Council

By admin - February 11th, 2013

bcoc Nonprofit Spotlight: Bucks County Opportunity Council The Bucks County Opportunity Council works to ensure that all residents of Bucks County are able to enjoy life and all the joys that the county has to offer – including a life without poverty.

We work with low-income people who are struggling to make ends meet and want to do better. Whether on a fixed income due to age or ability or because of life hardships, we help those in need, with a hand up.

Our mission is to help low-income families in Bucks County achieve and sustain economic self-sufficiency. We believe equipping people with the education, training, resources and skills necessary to permanently leave poverty is far more beneficial than helping them cope in poverty. Last year, we served nearly 9,000 people.

We prevent emergencies like eviction and utility shut-offs. Last year, we prevented over 250 evictions and found housing for 70 people who were homeless. We teach people how to budget, deb melissa alma bcoc 2 300x225 Nonprofit Spotlight: Bucks County Opportunity Council understand asset development, and aid in job search and employment skills. We lower home energy bills through energy conservation and successfully weatherized more than 400 homes last year. We offer free tax preparation for low to moderate-income families and saved Bucks County residents $10.5 million value in returns, tax credits and filling fees over the last 10 years. We support 27 food pantries throughout the county and distribute 463,000 meals annually.

Our nationally recognized Economic Self-Sufficiency Program helps hard-working, motivated people gain the education, skills, and resources to thrive without any future need for welfare assistance. Since the 1990’s, 244 people have permanently left poverty. This program saves the community more than $4 of welfare subsidies for every $1 invested.

We believe that a community thrives best because all of its members thrive. Our work is a collaboration of partnerships with caring community members, businesses and friends. All that we do is only possible with the wonderful support of Bucks County.

We invite you to join us in making life better for our neighbors. Learn about our work and remarkable stories at www.bcoc.org.

Nonprofits and the Social Networking Mindset

By admin - November 6th, 2012

Any business can use the tools they are given, but not every business can take those tools and use them to their full capacity. This is the difference between a toolset and a mindset.

What is a networking mindset? It’s a new type of leadership. Social Media Icons 300x290 Nonprofits and the Social Networking MindsetIt means using open participation and collective action. The leaders of the organization need to operate with an awareness of the networks the organization is involved in and listen to these networks to develop a stronger impact. With this mindset, organizations communicate in active conversations and take part themselves. They give their organization a voice, and with social media this can be done through multiple platforms.

When it comes to nonprofits and their utilization of social media platforms, they need to adopt a social networking mindset. Every business benefits from utilizing different platforms, but nonprofits are the true beneficiaries.

According to Beth Kanter, co-author of Measuring the Networked Nonprofit, there are four different stages a nonprofit goes through when trying to adopt a social networking mindset. They are: crawling, walking, running and flying.

Crawlers have set up their social media accounts but are not interacting with their community through them and are inconsistently posting. They need to work on developing a social media strategy within their communication plan for the organization.

Walkers are using the different social media channels but are not focusing on a specific strategy. They may be posting the same thing every week, or posting irrelevant information. According to Kantar, “Walkers should focus on one or two social media tools, going deep into tactics and generating tangible results and lessons.”

Runners have developed a detailed and centralized social media strategy for their organization. In this stage all employees within the organization are comfortable with their social media efforts. More than one department is able to focus on the social media strategy and participate in it.

Flyers are the innovators of social media within their industry. They are focused on changing and developing new strategies to further their impact on their communities. Flyers have fully developed a communications plan with social media platforms intact.

No matter what stage a nonprofit organization is in, the most important point to remember is to actively engage within their social media networks by first determining a strategy, then goals and objectives. They need to evaluate and adjust their efforts as needed and keep repeating the process until they hit their goals.

Without consistent engagement, a nonprofit can lose their following and reputation amongst their different channels. Remember, there’s a difference between a toolset and a mindset.

If your nonprofit organization is stuck in the crawling stage, contact IQnection’s Web Marketing Department to get you off the ground and flying – or call us at (215) 345-5424.

Non Profit Spotlight: The Quaker School At Horsham

By admin - October 8th, 2012

The Quaker School at Horsham: an educational solution serving grades kindergarten through ninth

the quaker school horsham 150x150 Non Profit Spotlight: The Quaker School At HorshamThe child who has fallen far behind in school or experiences social difficulties finds a place at The Quaker School at Horsham (TQS). TQS provides a sense of belonging to the children and parents who have felt like outsiders in other schools. The experienced professionals of TQS analyze the struggle, design an individualized plan and invite the family to be part of the solution. Research-based programs are carried out in a supportive Quaker environment. The child who has not been appreciated for his gifts unlocks his potential at TQS.

Students at TQS fall into an unusual niche: bright, creative people with severe specific learning disabilities. Most have developed numerous compensatory strategies to mask their inability to perform at grade level on typical learning tasks and skills. They need individualized, direct, explicit instruction by qualified, dedicated teachers. TQS teachers use a wide gamut of strategies and materials to reach and motivate their students, including integrated technology.

Students at The Quaker School at Horsham do not use technology because it enriches their learning experience. TQS students use technology because it is the best, and in many cases, the only strategy for them to learn where traditional group classroom methods did not. Please contact Mia Glenn, info@quakerschool.org, for inquiries regarding Open Houses or Admissions.
