Nonprofit Spotlight: THE CONSERVATORY

the conservatory Nonprofit Spotlight: THE CONSERVATORYIt’s amazing how many of us take for granted our abilities or even worse overlook our talents. Many convince themselves that they don’t have any creativity and often refuse to look at the possibilities within. Vincent Van Gogh was quoted as saying, “If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” The word “paint” in that quote can easily be changed to sing or dance or playing an instrument. The point is, just doing squelches the naysayer inside.

The Conservatory exists for you to explore your potential and to uncover what lies within. It offers individual and group instruction in music, art and drama ranging from the very basics to advanced college preparation and professional development. The experienced faculty of more than fifty working musicians and artists are ready to support your journey. Whether you have always wanted to play the piano or you would like to try your hand at painting, The Conservatory’s programs are intended for you to do so successfully in a positive and fun-filled environment.

No one is excluded from The Conservatory’s mission to make the arts accessible. The Conservatory’s outreach programs bring the arts to persons who might otherwise not have access. The Arts Therapy Program provides healing and growth using the arts for persons with disabilities. The Arts for Seniors Program opens up the arts for those more advanced in years, while the Neighborhood Notes program explores artistic activities with disadvantaged and at-risk youth.

Imagine our loss if Beethoven had allowed his deafness to stop him in the discovery of music. Consider the impact on the arts if Grandma Moses had not had the courage to begin painting as she began to age. Now, look at what you might have to offer or gain if you just take the chance and try something new and creative.

Nonprofit Spotlight: Bucks County Opportunity Council

By admin - February 11th, 2013

bcoc Nonprofit Spotlight: Bucks County Opportunity Council The Bucks County Opportunity Council works to ensure that all residents of Bucks County are able to enjoy life and all the joys that the county has to offer – including a life without poverty.

We work with low-income people who are struggling to make ends meet and want to do better. Whether on a fixed income due to age or ability or because of life hardships, we help those in need, with a hand up.

Our mission is to help low-income families in Bucks County achieve and sustain economic self-sufficiency. We believe equipping people with the education, training, resources and skills necessary to permanently leave poverty is far more beneficial than helping them cope in poverty. Last year, we served nearly 9,000 people.

We prevent emergencies like eviction and utility shut-offs. Last year, we prevented over 250 evictions and found housing for 70 people who were homeless. We teach people how to budget, deb melissa alma bcoc 2 300x225 Nonprofit Spotlight: Bucks County Opportunity Council understand asset development, and aid in job search and employment skills. We lower home energy bills through energy conservation and successfully weatherized more than 400 homes last year. We offer free tax preparation for low to moderate-income families and saved Bucks County residents $10.5 million value in returns, tax credits and filling fees over the last 10 years. We support 27 food pantries throughout the county and distribute 463,000 meals annually.

Our nationally recognized Economic Self-Sufficiency Program helps hard-working, motivated people gain the education, skills, and resources to thrive without any future need for welfare assistance. Since the 1990’s, 244 people have permanently left poverty. This program saves the community more than $4 of welfare subsidies for every $1 invested.

We believe that a community thrives best because all of its members thrive. Our work is a collaboration of partnerships with caring community members, businesses and friends. All that we do is only possible with the wonderful support of Bucks County.

We invite you to join us in making life better for our neighbors. Learn about our work and remarkable stories at www.bcoc.org.
