So, as the newest hotel owner in Philadelphia, which keyword(s) should you target?

Most website owners would immediately state – “hotel Philadelphia” or “hotel in Philadelphia” since those keywords have the highest monthly search volume.  In reality, that is the worst possible answer.

The hotels that currently show up on page #1 of Google search results for these terms have spent a lot of time and money getting their website listing there.  If it were easy to get a brand new competitor to the top of that list, most of the existing hotel owners would not have wasted the time or money in the first place.

So, how does a new entrant (either a new business or a new website) leverage Google and the other search engines to get visitors to their website?  The short answer is – start small and work your way up over time.

Instead of targeting “hotel Philadelphia” with its 200,000+ searches per month, professional SEO experts know they need to look for opportunities to work their way into higher and higher monthly search volume over the long term.

Getting a significant share of a term like “cheap hotel in Philadelphia” which only gets about 3,600 searches per month would be a more appropriate choice for the new entrant.

Here’s why – it would take many, many months (if not years) of diligent SEO work to get to page #1 (top 10 SEO ranking) for a keyword like “hotel in Philadelphia” but targeting a less competitive keyword and getting to page #1 of Google results might only take a few months.  In fact, the website owner could potentially hope to achieve position #1 on page #1 within six to twelve months and thereby garner about 40% of the total monthly search volume (1440 visitors/month in our example).

Personally, given a choice between being on page #50 for a very high search volume keyword after 12 months of SEO work versus being on page #1 for a much lower (but achievable) search volume keyword, I’ll take the page #1 SEO target every time.  On page 50, you will get exactly zero visitors.  On page #1, even for a very low search volume keyword, you will still get visitors to your website.

In addition to bringing visitors to your website sooner, targeting the right lower-search-volume keywords will also set you up to go after those higher volume keywords in the longer term.

SuperMedia/SuperPages Is Not the Same as Google

Search engine optimization (SEO) is key to helping your business get the most relevant traffic to your website. Although, getting “search-optimized” by SuperMedia (or Superpages.com), which sells print and internet advertising to small and medium-sized businesses is very different than getting search-optimized for Google.

When you put your listing on SuperMedia, it is then displayed on one of their websites (for example, www.superpages.com) and isn’t directly placed on Google. SuperPages is a search engine itself, just like Google is, so effectively your listing appears on a search website (SuperPages) within a search website (Google).  Unless you have purchased a premium listing, your listing will only show up among dozens of other listings below the premium paid listings.

After successfully optimizing your website to show up on page one of Google’s search results, people searching will be able to click on your listing and get directly sent to your website. You are competing with at most, 10 paid Gowebsite visibility on google SuperMedia/SuperPages Is Not the Same as Googleogle ads (listed on top of results), nine other Google organic (free) listings and possibly several (4-6) local listings.

If someone goes to do a Google search and clicks on the SuperPages listing (assuming SuperMedia has successfully “search engine optimized” their website for that specific keyword on Google), they will be redirected to SuperPages.com and will be asked to choose a location. After choosing a city, they will be presented with premium paid listings located at the top of the results follow by all of the regularly-paid listings for that specific keyword. It’s not uncommon to see more than four premium paid listings at the top of the SuperPages search results page followed by dozens of regularly paid listings. Many times, the premium paid listings aren’t even relevant to the keyword the searcher entered.

When you list your website with SuperMedia you have additional competition than you do with Google, including, multiple premium paid listings, regular paid listings and paid ads included on the SuperPages search results page.  Unfortunately, this means it is significantly less likely someone will click on your listing within the SuperMedia search results.

The best long term value of web marketing is through organic Google search results rather than through SuperMedia results.

10 Keys to Success: Writing Web Page Content That Works

  1. Build trust immediately.One of hardest things to overcome with an online business is building trust with visitors. Make your web pages as credible as possible. It starts with a professional-looking web page. Also consider using customer/client testimonials, third-party certification/security seals and similar recognizable icons.
  2. Make your call to action absolutely clear. There should be no doubt in the visitor’s mind as to what you want them to do next. Prominently place your telephone, email, etc.
  3. Keep it simple. Simplicity in design is praised for a reason. Too much clutter is distracting.
  4. Match your page title to content. Misleading titles won’t help keep the visitor on your web page. If the title focuses on widgets; the content should focus on widgets.
  5. Grade yourself (before the search engines do). Put yourself in the visitor’s shoes. How would you react to the content? Does it convince you to take action? Is the incentive for the visitor to take action strong enough?
  6. Think “above the fold”.  The really important content needs to come first and be visible as soon as the page displays.
  7. Squint. It’s a trick from art school, but it can still help you evaluate your landing page in a new way. Does your web page look balanced? Does it “flow”?
  8. Be a grammar-stickler. Make sure your spelling and grammar are perfect. Nothing says “amateur” more loudly than misspelled words and poor grammar.
  9. Utilize buttons for action keywords. Make the action words on the page into click-able buttons (e.g. – “Download”, “Sign Up”, “Buy Now”, etc.)
  10. Don’t distract your visitors with a lot of links. It is hard getting visitors to your website. Don’t make it easy for them to leave. Keep visitors on your web page as long as possible. If you must include links, put them toward the bottom of the page.

Before a case can be made for any business strategy, it is prudent to first operationally define the key terms. The word blog was originally known as a “weblog” and is simply a mini website that consists only of short journal-like entries known as “posts”. In its earliest form in the late 1990’s, blogs were used by individuals as an online diary. As the internet matured and became more social, blogs evolved into an exceptional vehicle for business to share knowledge and demonstrate expertise with its customers, clients and employees.

Interestingly, the word “should” requires clarification here as well. “Should”, by definition, implies obligation. Facebook Timeline for Business Pages

The Facebook Timeline is now available for business pages. You have until March 30, 2012 to make the switch.facebook icon Facebook Timeline for Business Pages

With this change, brand-focused business pages will be getting the large cover photos previously available only on personal profiles. Photos, likes and other ‘apps’ (maps, events, calendar) will be featured at the top of the page, just to the right of the profile photo. Businesses will now be able to make any post appear larger by ‘starring’ or ‘pin’ a new post to the top of their page. In addition, business pages get other new features including messaging capabilities – previously not available for businesses.

The new layout, however, will do away with the ‘landing tabs’ that asked users to like their pages. Now all visitors to a page will see the timeline view by default.

Here is a list of changes to make to improve your brand communications on the new Facebook look:

  1. Brand Value – As communicated through the Cover Photo, This ‘signature’ feature can be used for a popular item, artwork or picture of people using your product. You are NOT allowed to use promotional campaign purchase information, call-to-action or reference Facebook interface elements such as ‘Like or Share”.
  2. Brand Identification – The profile image will be shown as a box on the left atop your cover photo. The dimensions of this have changed, profile images used previously may be ‘cut off’ with the new format.
  3. Page Summary Box – It is important to explain your offerings in this summary, since you are unable to add text to the main images. You can edit this information, but are unable to choose from which fields the information will be populated. The type of information that appears in the summary is specific to your Page’s Category.
  4. Direct Link to your Website – By adding your domain in the description summary (www.domain.com) can add a direct link to visit your site.
  5. Customer Passage – Access to other content is available through ‘views and apps’ that appears on the right, just below the cover photo. Here is where you can find access to your ‘fan page’, photo albums, video directories, events. This area can be expanded to show all areas available.
  6. Pinned Posts – This feature allows featuring a post in a prominent position.
  7. Starred Posts – Starring a post will allow it to appear across the complete width.
