Google Product Search Google Product Search Will Become Google Shopping

Free is moving to Fee

The free Merchant Listings known as Google Products is just about to ‘close’.  Google announced on May 31st that they will be changing the ‘business model’  and rolling out Google Shopping.  Only merchants that “pay to be listed” will be eligible to advertise within this new PLA (Product Listing Ads) format.

Google says the older free model can lead to some shady and obsolete information, whereas by charging vendors, they will “encourage them to keep their product information fresh and up to date.”

Google is offering  incentives to merchants to transition to this new model:

  1. All merchants who create Product Listing Ads by August 15, 2012 will automatically receive a monthly credit for 10% of their total Product Listing Ad spend through the end of 2012
  2. Existing Google Product Search merchants can receive $100 AdWords credit toward Product Listing Ads if they fill out a form before August 15, 2012.

The changes have begun, and more will take place over the next few months.  The projected timeline looks something like this:

  • June 1
    Experiments begin on select searches
  • July 1
Transition begins to replace Google Shopping to Google PLA (Product Listing Ads)
  • August 15
    Incentive program deadline:

    • 10% charge back for rest of the year on PLA  (Product Listing Ads) spend
    • $100 Adwords credit
  • October 1
Full transition to new PLA  (Product Listing Ads) model

In addition, merchants who want to stand out from the crowd can choose to participate in Google’s new Trusted Stores program. Google Trusted Stores is a badge for e-commerce sites which gives users background on merchants—whatever their size—including ratings for on-time shipping and customer service. Google stands behind merchants that have earned the Google Trusted Stores badge with a $1,000 lifetime purchase protection guarantee per shopper.

Last-Minute Holiday Gift Purchases Will Be Mobile

By admin - September 20th, 2011

Google has done some calculations based on mobile search growth patterns over the past few years and have announced this projection for the coming holiday shopping season:

“44 percent of total searches for last minute gifts and store locator terms will be from mobile devices this holiday season based on historical growth rates.”

smartphonel 256x300 Last Minute Holiday Gift Purchases Will Be MobileIn reviewing the last 2 years of mobile shopping patterns, Google found what they are calling a “double-peak” on mobile devices.

  1. The first around “Black Friday
  2. The second followed the last weekend before Christmas

Google adds that people who are doing searches for products and store locations on mobile phones are more likely to actually show up and buy something.

Data from a 2011 AdMob survey says 65% of respondents answered yes to the following question:

“Have you used your Smartphone to find a business, and then made a purchase at that business-in-person?”

Google stated that its survey showed both Smartphone and Tablet users intended to start their shopping before Thanksgiving this year.

Taking together these surveys means marketers need to be ready for people doing a large part of their shopping on Mobile Devices and Smartphones.

However, you also need to be conscious of the growing iPad & Tablet users as well. Studies show that Tablet users are more engaged and spend more than other online shoppers. This data means it is imperative to optimize your web presence for these devices.

Google noted that a large majority of their major advertising clients – 70% as of February 2011 – still did not have an optimized mobile presence.

All of this data shows an accelerated rate of consumer’s adoption of mobile. The retailers and marketers that are not yet fully optimized for mobile or do not have a mobile paid search strategy are way behind and will lose sales.

Time is running out to catch up for this year’s holiday shopping.

The holidays are almost upon us and there is no better time than now to start offering incentives to boost your website sales. Holiday shoppers are always looking for great deals so you should take advantage of this time to build customer loyalty and increase sales.

Offer incentives available only through your website:

  • Free shipping/free return shipping.
  • Special gift with purchase.
  • Extended cut-off time for express shipping for last minute shoppers.
  • Create a promotions calendar outlining coupon deadlines for shopper reference.

Utilize Coupons:

  • Percentage discounts: 10%, 20% off specific items or total purchase during holiday season is always a draw.
  • Coupon websites: Use these sites to promote discounts to a large audience. There are several sites you can submit your coupons to for free.
  • Special discounts for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
  • Use e-mail list to send out special holiday offers.

Another thing to consider during the holiday shopping season is making sure your site can handle the new traffic during this time.

You should also go through the site to make sure shoppers can find what they are looking for:

  • Update your homepage graphic or slideshow to be holiday focused.
  • Resubmit your site map with your new holiday products and categories so search engines can index and rank them before the selling season takes off.
  • Create product bundles.
  • Highlight “stocking stuffers” or low-prices items.

With the popularity of online-shopping at an all-time high, it is extremely important to make sure your website is ready for the upcoming holiday season. Happy selling!
