Basics of Social Media Marketing

By admin - July 22nd, 2011

1. Update - Try to update daily. When visitors come to a page that has not been updated in over a month, they may assume it is inactive and decide not to follow your business. They also may go to a competitor whose page page is so active they feel that business may give them better service. You certainly do not what that to happen, so update your social media pages daily.

2. No pitching – You do not need to yell at consumers telling them to purchase your product or use your business. Social media is meant to connect, not pitch. If your consumers feel they have a connection with your company through your Facebook page or Twitter feed, they are more likely to use you over another business that does not make an earnest effort to connect.

3. Communicate with your audience – If you do not feel it is necessary to reply to comments, answer questions, or join in on conversations on your page, then social media may not be for you. You need to be a part of the conversations on your page. If not you may lose touch with your customers and what they want.

4. Choose Wisely – What you say will forevermore remain public on the internet. Choose what you post on your page sensibly. If you hire a company to post for you, be sure to hire someone you can trust.

5. Handle angry customers with class – Some customers will just have a bad day and want to take it out on your page and blame you for everything. Do not remove any negative comments unless, of course, they are inappropriate. If it is only one comment, just ignore it. If you are in a quandary, post an update saying your business is making moves to fix the problem. Never directly respond to one individual, you will not win. Finally, do not make promises you cannot keep.

6. Link to others – If you find something relevant and interesting on the web, link it on your Facebook or Twitter page, then explain why you find it interesting. Ask for input. Link to other companies, articles, websites, etc. Just be sure it is relevant to your business.

7. Share - Don’t be afraid to show your customers what your employees are doing when they are not in the office. Take photos of your office picnic, event, or a run/walk for a good cause. These photos create a positive image about your company for your customers.

8. Start a weekly trend – If you do something once a week, on the same day each week, your followers are bound to come back that day every week. For example, if you own a shoe store, every Monday you could post the shoe of the week. Include an image and a promotion for the shoe, such as a percentage off that week only. If you posted every Monday, consumers are bound to check every Monday to see what pair you are promoting that week. It’s a great way to get customers onto your social media pages as well as into your store.

9. Link to your blog – Don’t be afraid to link back to your blog. You put a lot of hard work and effort into it and you want people to read it.

10. Spread the word - If you have a Facebook, Twitter, blog, YouTube channel, etc. you need to tell people. Put them on your company website, on your business cards; put a sign up in your store saying, “Add us!” Do not be afraid to tell your customers you are on Facebook. If they like you and your product, they will share it on their Facebook account.

Social media marketing is all about using the internet to engage customers, rather than market to them. Using social media allows you to develop ongoing relationships with current customers and gain new customers based on your reputation.

Benefits of a Blog

By admin - April 22nd, 2011

For a small business adding a Blog to your website maybe a big decision, and one you may think not worth the extra work it could entail. However, there are benefits that can be obtained by adding a company Blog. Here are a few:

  • Adding Content for Search Engines
    • For every Blog post published you are adding another page to your website. This means you can create content and include the keywords you are trying to rank for in the search engine results. Adding these pages gives the search engine ‘spiders’ additional pages to ‘crawl’. When writing the content, use up to 10 new keywords you want to target. These can include longer phrases that contain these keywords. The more pages you can get into the top search engine results, the greater the potential for more visitors.
  • Fresh Content
    • Search engines like websites that have new, fresh content. By posting to your Blog, you are updating your websites content. In addition, for every Blog post you are adding another URL to your site. This in turn gives the search engines a reason to come back and crawl your pages. Not to mention the benefits for your viewers. You can Blog about new products or new trends in your industry. This in turn can generate more sales and leads.
  • The Power of Links
    • One of the keys to search engine rankings is the amount of ‘inbound links’ to your site. Links are how search engines find new web pages. By linking your Blog posts to relevant pages of your website you are sending signals to the search engines to see the connections between your pages and the content.
  • Avoid Duplicate Content
    • Search engines do their best to avoid showing duplicate content in search results. Try and publish original content which will rank better.

A Blog is a great way to keep your content new and in turn boost your search engine results. In addition to giving people reason to revisit your site often. There are no rules as to the number of posts needed to be published and even once a month is a good place to start. Ideally Blog posts need not be larger than 400 words. Half of all Blogs average 100-250 words.

Reasons to Have a Facebook Page

By Susan Shultz - February 19th, 2010

There are 350 million reasons.  Yes, that’s the last count on the number of ‘global’ users Facebook has (and counting).  Facebook can be a tremendous source of web traffic. In all likelihood most of the people you know are on it, and any who are not, may be eventually. Social networking is consuming more and more of people’s time, and thanks to mobile devices, it is accessible all of the time. If you don’t have a Facebook Page, you may be missing not only traffic to your website, but an opportunity to connect with customers.   Ultimately this will help your brand’s reputation.

*The average Facebook user spends 55 minutes per day on Facebook.

Add a Blog to Your Website – A Year From Now You’ll Be Happy You Did…

By Frank Stoczko - January 18th, 2010

In addition to giving you and your business a convenient platform to “talk” with your customers and prospective customers, there are many other benefits that come from adding a blog to your website:

  1. Search engines see blogs as being more important than regular website pages therefore blog pages tend to get faster and better placement.
  2. Each new article creates a new page on your website.  Search engines love larger sites.
  3. Each article is uniquely index-able by the search engines so you can get indexed for all combinations of your target keyword phrases.
  4. Blogs tend to be informal so articles are fairly easy to write especially for those of us who fear more formal forms of writing.
  5. Each article only needs to be 200 to 300 words in length to be effective.  You can also add photos, videos, podcasts, etc. into your blog articles.
  6. Your articles can link back to other pages of your website (e.g. – specific product pages, photo gallery, etc).  These links help your visitors more thoroughly browse your website and, it also helps with SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
  7. Adding a “Share This” button after each article makes it real easy for visitors to forward articles to friends and family; send articles to their Facebook, Twitter, etc. page or simply bookmark articles so they can return to them later.
  8. Blog article comments allow visitors a non-threatening way to initiate contact with you.
  9. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) gives visitors an easy way to get future articles automatically.  This is a great way to keep your current customers coming back to your website and tell others about it as well.
  10. Using categories and tags to index your blog makes it easy for visitors to find articles about the things they are most interested in.

Bottom line, adding a blog gives your website a unique voice and a personality

Do I Need A Blog?

By Susan Shultz - December 1st, 2009

It is no longer notable if you have a blog – today people wonder why you don’t have a blog. The internet has evolved into a social community where people connect, share, publish and collaborate. In today’s society there is a sense of immediacy – things change by the second. For example, texting and Twitter have become large communication tools due to our desire for continuous updates.

What are the benefits of adding a blog to your site?

  • Validation: Shows that your Company is up-to-date signifying you are communicative.
  • Immediacy: You can make changes at any time.
  • Extended Reach: Blog pages will be indexed by the Search Engines and listed in blog directories and Search Results. These additional links will enable you to capture more visitors.
  • Flexibility: Ability to try focused promotions and test marketing ideas.
  • Accessibility: A company not engaged with their audience and monitoring what’s being said about them is out of touch with their customers. Through a blog your visitors and potential customers can communicate with you.

An example of a successful blog is dmflavors.com/blog. Erin O’Donnell, Marketing Manager for David Michael & Company, believes that adding the blog to their site has helped improve their rankings and internet searches. Erin says, “Our blog delivers another opportunity to communicate with our clients, not just professionally, but on a personal level as well.”

DMFlavors.com delivers promotional messages intertwined with research information. Adding the capability of posting their blog comments directly to their company’s Twitter account has also helped make this a successful example of how a blog can help your company. The fact is their ‘blog’ landing page has increased to a Google PageRank of 3 and the home page of their web site a PageRank of 4.

What is Google Page Rank?

PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. This is Google’s way of deciding a page’s importance. This matters because it is one of the factors they use to determine a page’s ranking in the search results.

So do you need a blog? My answer would be yes. A blog will enable you to communicate and promote to your existing and prospective customers in addition to increasing your PageRank and placement on the Search Engine Results Pages which can, in turn, bring you more customers.
